Letter from William Osler to Lawrence F. Flick [Transcript]
Description:
Arrangements for Osler's upcoming lecture in Philadelphia. He reports that the rivalry over the Tuberculosis question has intensified. After Osler informed people in Paris that there would be no Congress on Tuberculosis in the U.S. in 1905, he saw in the paper that Daniel Lewis's Congress has been postponed until 1905. Osler believes that a national committee should be organized to take charge of the entire issue.

About this transcript: Soon after Osler's death in 1919, Lady Osler asked their good friend Dr. Harvey Cushing to write a biography. For this project, Cushing gathered a wide variety of material, including a substantial amount of Osler correspondence and other memorabilia borrowed from Osler's family, friends, and colleagues. He employed three secretaries to transcribe these documents, and later donated the transcripts (along with his other working materials) to the Osler Library. Because many of the original documents were returned to the owners, the Cushing transcripts constitute the largest and most accessible collection of Osler's correspondence.
Harvey Cushing's "Life of Sir William Osler" was published by Oxford University Press in 1925, and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1926.

Dear Flick:
Thank you very much. I should be glad to dine with you on the third.
I shall send the manuscript to Dr. Jelliffe as soon as it is ready, but I doubt if it will be until after the lecture.
There is a nice snarl now about this tuberculosis business. After I had cabled to the Paris people that there would be no Congress of Tuberculosis in this country in 1905 I saw in the paper yesterday morning that Lewis's Congress has been postponed until 1905. I think it would be well to get together in national committee to take charge of the whole business, particularly as Magnin says they are very anxious in Paris to have some representation here. We can talk it over next week.
Sincerely yours,
Wm Osler
