Short Course in Medical Genetics (Heredity and Disease in Man and Animals) to Be Held in Bar Harbor, Maine, Summer 1963-1965
Under the Joint Sponsorship of the Roscoe P. Jackson Memorial Laboratory and The John Hopkins University School of Medicine
Co-Directors: John L. Fuller, Ph.D. (for the Jackson Laboratory) and Victor A. McKusick, M.D. (for The Johns Hopkins University)
I. PURPOSE. The purpose of this grant is to support an intensive two-week course in the background and substance of medical genetics to be given under the joint sponsorship of the staffs of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and The Jackson Laboratory. Support is requested for three years, 1963-1965.
We see three primary benefits to be derived from the course:
a. Teaching. The majority of the students will be assistant professors on the faculty of medical schools. These individuals from such departments as pediatrics, and medicine make use of recent genetic findings in teaching their specialties. In addition, some of these individuals have been assigned to the teaching of courses in medical genetics and wish to bring themselves up to date in this field.
b. Recruitment. A number of recent medical graduates who are considering entrance into the field of medical genetics will be accepted as students. In addition, we accept a number of deans of medical schools and professors of medicine who are concerned with advising students with respect to careers. Senior faculty who have become acquainted with the field of medical genetics are in a better position to advise younger persons of the opportunities in this area.
c. Research. Furthering of research in medical genetics is another important objective of the course. Several cooperative projects have been established as a result of ideas developed during previous sessions.
II. PREVIOUS WORK. With the support of the National Foundation, essentially identical courses were given in August 1960 and 1961, and a third will be given in August 1962. See Progress Reports for these years.
Forty-five students, most of them senior members of medical school faculties, took the course in 1960. In 1961 the number of students was increased to 50, and in 1962, 60 students will take the course.
It was originally expected that the demand for the course would be less after it had been given for 2 years. From the increased number of applications in 1962, however, it appears that current interest in medical genetics is such that demand will continue high for an indefinite number of years.
Students and staff have recommended that the course be continued in essentially the same form. Following their suggestions, however, minor modifications have been made each year. Sessions are held each morning and evening, and the afternoons are left free for reading and informal conferences. The excellent McGraw-Hill lecture films in genetics are used to supplement the regular sessions. They are shown afternoon and after that evening sessions.

V. FACILITIES FOR PROGRAM. It is tentatively proposed to use the facilities at the Emerson School in Bar Harbor in future summers, as in 1962. In previous years the Oakes Center, also in Bar Harbor, was printed from Bowdoin College, and served as a headquarters for the Course. The Emerson School has the advantage of accommodating a larger number of students, but may be less convenient as an informal place for contacts between faculty and students. The budget is compiled on the assumption that the Emerson School will be used; if it appears advantageous to move back to the Oakes Center, a revised budget will be submitted.
The dates of the course in previous years have been the second and third weeks in August which are the height of the summer recreation season in Bar Harbor. Consideration is now being given to the possibility of changing the dates, in order to ease pressure on housing for students and staff. A decision regarding the dates of the course for 1963 and subsequent years will be based on a survey of the 1962 class.
