This speech was delivered in late 1989, which seems like the "Dark Ages" in reference to modern high-tech communication, in spite of the fact that it is only fifteen years earlier than this introduction is being written.
Continuing medical education is certainly essential; it was then, and it is now. This paper written before the high-tech age got into high-gear is a commentary on the benefits and deficits of CME, at least in the eyes of this physician fifteen years ago.
