Lerman obtained physical chemical evidence that chemicals of the acridine type, specifically proflavin, produced mutations
in genes by which individual bases where added to, or deleted from, the base sequence, thereby changing the sequence and,
with it, the order of the amino acids in the protein for which the gene coded. By contrast, other mutations consist of substitutions

It was nice to hear from you especially after missing you in August. We have no plans of looking into the power dependence
in the production of acridine mutants. We shall be very happy to send you a representative set. We propose to send you one
of each mutant we have which is clearly different from all the other mutants in the set. Leslie and I have estimated that
this will come to about 60 mutants. Every other acridine-type mutant in this region is probably the same as one or other
from the set. We will also send you the map showing the location of these mutants and, of course, their signs. The logistics
of this is not too terrible and Leslie hopes to fit it in during the next few weeks.
I have settled down this afternoon to writing the first pages of our paper on acridine mutants. We still do not have all
the data we need, but we now have most of it and it seems sensible to start writing. If there is any other information you
need to know about the acridine mutants please do not hesitate to write, and if we have it we will send it to you by return
Ted Puck tried to tempt me to Denver next Spring but it really is impossible to fit it in this time, and I have promised that
I will come sometime in the Spring of 1966. Odile and I will be in La Jolla this February so if there is anything you would
like to discuss you could always come over and visit us there.
