As per our conversation of yesterday, I am writing to request your favorable consideration of renewal of the Lasker Foundation
contribution to CNHI.
The coming year may well be decisive in our long struggle for a national health insurance program. The issue steadily boils
down to what will be the emphasis of the program: will it encourage preventive medicine or only cover catastrophic costs?
Will it provide coverage for everyone or only for most? Will it have cost and quality controls that work or merely rely on
the existing ones?
As you know, largely through our efforts in which you have played a leading role from the outset, there are now sane 300 members
of the Congress who are sponsoring one or another of the major national health insurance bills. It is reasonable to assume
that if we keep up the pressure, the will of the people will be more readily recognized by the Congress and final action can
be expected in the near future. Ours can be a great victory for all Americans.
Please let me know if we may anticipate a contribution for the current fiscal year
which began last May 1.
