Dear Mrs. Lasker:
As you know, the Senate has authorized this Committee to conduct a study of research activities in cancer to determine what legislation and new Federal programs are necessary for the conquest and elimination of cancer.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor and Public Welfare, I am authorized to appoint a Committee of Consultants, citizens eminent in science and other walks of life, to conduct the study. Knowing of your long interest and dedicated work in this area, I would personally appreciate it very much if you would agree to serve on this panel, and I hope most sincerely that you will find time in your busy schedule to accept this enormous challenge.
I know that you agree with me that the time has come for a determined effort to conquer cancer. We must have the aid of our best minds if we are to do that.
This group of dedicated scientists and citizens will begin to function at once. It will be expected to hold hearings and to make a report by the Fall.
I hope you will accept this invitation to join with other members in this great venture. I am confident that your efforts will be well rewarded and that all mankind will benefit from them.
Sincerely yours.
Ralph W. Yarborough
