Dear Dr. Cantell,
Enclosed is a check from the Lasker Foundation for $200,000 for four billion units of Interferon, to be matched by an equal amount of Interferon which Dr. Jordan Gutterman is to receive from the Finnish Red Cross.
The Lasker Foundation will purchase half the additional amount of Interferon necessary for the rest of the nine months of Dr. Gutterman's breast cancer study, with the understanding that you will match this purchase with an equal amount of Interferon.
(The total amount of Interferon required for the initial 9 months for 50 patients is 20.25 billion units. The Lasker Foundation would pay $506,250 for half this amount, or 10.125 billion units, and you and the Finnish Red Cross would donate the remaining half or 10.125 billion units.)
At the end of 8 months, we would like to reassess the progress of the study. However, we do want to have an option to purchase with Lasker Foundation funds, or funds which we may raise, sufficient quantities of Interferon to complete the second 9 months of the study, with the understanding that you will supply half of the Interferon needed as a gift.
(To complete the second 9 months of the study will require 17.55 billion units; we would arrange to pay for half of this amount - 8.775 billion units for $438,750, and you would donate the matching 8.775 billion units to make the 17.55 billion units total required.)
If this is agreeable to you, will you and whoever else is in charge of the matter sign at the bottom of the enclosed copy of this letter, returning it to me as soon as possible, and we will consider this a binding agreement.
We are hoping that your work and aid will make a great contribution to the improved treatment not only of breast cancer but other forms of cancer as well.
With all warm good wishes,
Sincerely yours,
Mrs. Albert D. Lasker
