Dear Mary:
For the last twenty years you and I have been committed to the battle for national health care insurance. The reform we have long sought has been slow in coming, but this year we have a genuine opportunity to move forward on a major bill that will bring health care to the millions of Americans who are uninsured, and millions more whose insurance is inadequate.
In recent months we have intensified our efforts by working closely with Phil Johnston and Harvey Sloane. As you may know, Phil is the former Commissioner of Human Services in Massachusetts, and Harvey has devoted his life, as a politician and a doctor, to bringing health care to those who need it most. They have organized a new advocacy organization -- Health Care for America -- to build a national coalition for enactment of the bill.
I am convinced that the efforts of Health Care for America are critical to our hopes for a national health care program, and I am working with Phil and Harvey to generate grassroots and financial support to get the organization off the ground and running.
I'm hopeful that you may be willing to help us in this effort. I know that Health Care for America would welcome your assistance, and I know that your participation would be invaluable to our efforts. I would, of course, be happy to provide any further information you may wish.
With my respect and warmest regards.
Edward M. Kennedy
