A follow-up to the article Alloway published in early 1932 in which he demonstrated that by dissolving certain living pneumococci cells in sodium deoxycholate one could bring about transformation in vitro, rather than in laboratory mice as had previously been demonstrated. Through the process described in this article, he yielded the first soluble preparation of what would later become known as DNA.
