Prior to going to work at the Rockefeller Hospital in 1913, Avery cut his teeth as a medical researcher at the Hoagland Institute in Brooklyn, one of the first privately-funded medical research laboratories in the United States. As part of his duties, Avery often lectured nursing students. It is here that he acquired the nickname "Fess," short for "The Professor," that would remain with him for the remainder of his career.
