Description:

With this letter, Heidelberger accepted the Emil von Behring Prize from Philipps University in Marburg, Germany. Von Behring, the discoverer of a serum used to induce immunity against diphtheria, had been awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, in 1901, for his work in immuno- and serum therapy. Heidelberger, the descendant of German Jewish immigrants, was fluent in both German and French.
