Description:

Heidelberger was twice president of the American Association of Immunologists, in 1947 and 1949. In both of his respective presidential addresses, "Science, Freedom, and Peace" and "Ivory Pawn in the Ivory Tower," he stressed the obligation of scientists to oppose war and to reemphasize Benjamin Franklin's dictum that science transcended national boundaries. Leake echoed Heidelberger's sentiments, stating that science "is the most important unifying force . . . in the world today."
