In this article, Heidelberger and Kendall described their method for using neutral sodium salts to separate compounds of polysaccharide antigens of type I, II, and III pneumococcus and their homologous antibodies (an antibody specific to an antigen). Their contribution was important because previous methods of isolation using heat, acids, or alkali had significantly changed the results of experiments conducted with these polysaccharides.
