In this article, Avery and Heidelberger discuss their findings regarding the immunologic relationship between the nucleoprotein and carbohydrate portions of pneumococcus. The pair found that the carbohydrate portion of each type of pneumococcus (by 1923 scientists had identified three different types I, II, and III, roughly based on capsule size) was in fact a polysaccharide unique to that particular type. They also found that while the nucleoprotein component is antigenic when isolated outside of the cell, the polysaccharide component is not. Heidelberger and Avery concluded that the two combine to form an antigenic complex that has different properties than each of its member components.
