In this letter, the president of the Philipps University in Marburg, Germany, inquired whether Heidelberger would accept the Emil von Behring Prize, awarded by the university to recognize pathbreaking work in immunology. Von Behring, the discoverer of a serum used to induce immunity against diphtheria, had been awarded the first Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, in 1901, for his discoveries in immuno- and serum therapy. The von Behring prize was to be awarded to Heidelberger during commemorations of the 100th birthdays of von Behring and Paul Ehrlich, also one of the founders of immunology.
