Each of the five phenotypes of abnormalities in lipid metabolism (hyperlipoproteinemia) identified by Fredrickson and his colleagues during the 1950s and 60s differed in clinical signs and genetic expression. Each also responded to different diets and drugs. Accordingly, the National Heart Institute published handbooks for physicians to make them aware of these abnormalities and the means by which they can be managed through diet. An estimated seven million copies of the handbooks were distributed.
