- Description:
- This Supplement to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guidelines for Recombinant DNA Research provided schematic construction blueprints as well as detailed descriptions of safety equipment and comprehensive safety instructions for laboratories involved in recombinant DNA research. To be certified as a P4-level, or high containment, laboratory, shown above, a facility had to have multiple ventilation systems, airlocks, autoclaves for the sterilization of equipment, and treatment systems for waste products. In order to comply with the Guidelines, government agencies, universities, and private industry upgraded their laboratories during the second half of the 1970s.
