- In this article on vascular repair, DeBakey noted that tubes made of Vitallium (an alloy of cobalt, chromium, and molybdenum developed in 1932) could be used as a graft for arterial repair. Within a few years, he and others would successfully use homografts and then Dacron fabric grafts instead. (Vitallium is still used for artificial joints and in dentistry, for its resistance to corrosion.)
