DeBakey is on the far right.. For the second part of his European medical training, DeBakey went to Heidelberg to work with Martin Kirschner. Kirschner (1879-1942) was a well-known German surgeon who taught in Koenigsberg, Tubingen, and Heidelberg during his career. He performed the first successful pulmonary embolectomy in 1924 and made significant contributions to vascular surgery, plastic surgery, and orthopedic surgery, and to anesthesiology. He published articles on a wide range of surgical topics, contributed to eight surgical textbooks, and edited five medical journals.
