This article was the first in a series of papers by Axelrod on the role played in the body by sympathetic amines, a broad class of chemicals that mimic the actions of the sympathetic nervous system and have an amine basic structure. Through a variety of tests on several animals, Axelrod found two primary processes, demethylation and hydroxylation, that metabolically transformed ephedrine. He also noted that various animal species showed considerable differences in the relative importance of the two metabolic routes.
