Swan, an avid small plane pilot, survived three plane crashes during 1958 and 1959, and sustained several ankle fractures among other injuries. While his bones healed, he continued to perform surgery, using a specially built platform that allowed him to reach the operating table from his wheelchair, as shown in this photo. Casts can be seen on both of his legs here.
