This monograph expands on the relationship between morphine and other narcotics and the enzyme adenylate cyclase, arguing that endogenous opiate peptides act as dual regulators of adenylate cyclase exactly as morphine and other conventional narcotics. As potent, receptor mediated, inhibitors of adenylate cyclase activity in homogenates of hybrid cells, these peptides also have "addiction-like" qualities.
