Stellar, chairman of the Committee of Human Rights for the National Academy of Sciences, provides Nirenberg with background on the important work of the committee, founded in 1976 at the request of NAS membership. Stellar provides examples of some of the cases with favorable outcomes including Pedro Castillo in Chile, Ismail Mohamed in South Africa, and Anatoly Scharansky in the Soviet Union. Nirenberg is invited to be a correspondent to the committee.
