Dr. Virginia Apgar (1909-1974) was the anesthesiologist who developed the Apgar Score for evaluating newborns in 1952. Her subsequent research in neonatology included studies of birth defects and in 1959 she became the director of the Division of Congenital Malformations at the March of Dimes. There she was responsible for reviewing grant applications, raising public and professional awareness of birth defects and the research in progress, and encouraging support for research in this area, often traveling thousands of miles every year. Attending professional conferences and courses such as the Short Course in Medical Genetics helped her keep up to date with progress in the field, even if--as she humorously suggests in this letter--her demanding schedule precluded a stellar performance on the exams.
