Description:

This hearing considered the request of Richmond Hobson (head of the International Narcotic Education Association) to have the U.S. government print 50 million copies of his article "The Peril of Narcotics" and distribute it to the public. Kolb, who was then researching addiction for the PHS, testified that many of Hobson's claims about the nature and extent of addiction were false. Hobson would spend the next few years accusing Kolb and the PHS of incompetence and of plotting to keep the truth about drugs from the American public. (Hobson's article was not printed by the federal government, though his supporters managed to have a copy inserted into the Congressional Record later that year.)
