Group photo after Wilbur A. Sawyer's arrival in Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, Brazil
Date:
15 June 1934
Description:
In 1934, Dr. Sawyer made another trip to Brazil to inspect yellow fever control activities, including an investigation of a puzzling outbreak of the disease in a rural region near the Bolivian border. In a welcome contrast to earlier visits to South America, Sawyer was able to travel by plane to such remote areas, rather than by boat or on horseback. Left to right (front): Dr. Alberto Novis, State Director of Public Health for Mato Grosso, Dr. Sawyer, Dr. F. L. Soper, Dr. Francisco Freire, Dr. Oswaldo Novis (son of Dr. Alberto Novis, viscerotomy representative).
