Description:

Howard Temin (1934-1994) received the Nobel Prize in 1975 (with David Baltimore and Renato Dulbecco) for his discovery of reverse transcriptase, which enabled RNA viruses to give instructions to cellular DNA. Hamilton Smith shared the 1978 Nobel Prize (with Daniel Nathans and Werner Arber) for the discovery of restriction enzymes. William Natcher (1909-1994) was a member of Congress and chaired the House Appropriations Committee during the years when funding for AIDS research at NIH was greatly expanded. Many researchers--including Nobel laureates--testified re: the need for more biomedical research funding during the 1980s.
