In this article, Luria reported that several phages killed by ultraviolet light, then put into the same cell, can often revive themselves and produce normal progeny. He noted that if specific genes were intentionally damaged, through exchanges with another phage they can reconstitute as a normal, undamaged phage. Luria interpreted this as an instance of genetic recombination. This article would be followed by a more formal and detailed presentation of the subject in "Genetics" in 1949.
