In 1961, Dr. Koop spent six weeks in Africa, visiting hundreds of missionary physicians and health care workers for the Medical Assistance Program, an Illinois-based evangelical relief agency that sent drugs and medical supplies to 75 countries in Africa and other parts of the developing world.
