The United States Sanitary Commission (USSC), a civilian organization, sent physicians and others to inspect U.S. Army camps and hospitals during the Civil War, gathering data on camp and hospital conditions, health of the troops, and supplies needed. In December 1861, the USSC sent a report to the Secretary of War, including this detailed breakdown of disease and other medical cases occurring in the Union Army during the first seven months of the war.
