In this personal, at times autobiographical lecture, Crick explained why he made the study of biology his life's pursuit. Crick almost never permitted transcription and publication of his lectures, in part because he wanted to avoid the trouble of editing the text, and in part because he wanted to maintain the spontaneity and informality the lecture format permits. Moreover, Crick used lectures to sound out new ideas and report research findings that were often preliminary and, in his estimation, not yet fit for print. Most of the time, this leaves his notes as the only record of what he said.
