Szent-Gyorgyi gave this address at the tenth anniversary meeting of the Hungarian Physiological Society in May 1940, to introduce the projects underway at his laboratory in Szeged. He discussed his own approach to biochemical research, then described various investigations into the chemistry and structures involved in muscular contraction. This published essay also included many photographs and diagrams showing how measurements were made and conclusions reached.
