Following his work with Max Delbruck on phage-resistant bacteria, Luria studied the effect of ultraviolet radiation on bacterial viruses. In this article, he demonstrated that UV radiation not only inactivated bacteriophages, but--unlike when exposed to X-rays--also delayed the growth of the surviving virus particles.
