Luria summarized earlier findings on the radiation of bacteriophages, specifically addressing previous work that demonstrated an apparent loss of reproductive ability that was considered an irreversible change affecting the phage as a whole. He noted that this appeared to be a loss of the ability to initiate production of active phage under particular conditions that Luria argued needed to be defined more precisely. He further noted that recent findings indicated that active virus could be produced from bacterial particles that were previously considered inactive.
