Gorman wrote Every Other Bed "for the express purpose of bringing to the American people the facts about the parlous state of psychiatric research and training in a country fat with prosperity, two-toned automobiles, and refrigerators which open from either side." Though some progress had been made in reforming the treatment of the mentally ill, Gorman said, a thorough overhaul of the entire national system was called for; as of 1955, half of all hospital beds in the U.S. were occupied by psychiatric patients (hence the book title). Gorman condensed six of the book chapters for a six-part series published by the Philadelphia Inquirer in June 1956.. This book was later published by World Publishing Company.
