Energetics of Functional Activation in Neural Tissues
This article reviewed the evidence that increase in glucose utilization in a functionally activated pathway is localized to
synapse-rich regions in neuropil and not at all to perikarya, is linearly related to the spike frequency in the afferent pathway
to the area, is the result of stimulation of Na+, K+ -ATPase activity, and in glutamatergic pathways occurs in astroglial
as well as neuronal elements in the neuropil.
