This is Avery's "President's Address" to the Society of American Bacteriologists delivered in Baltimore in December of 1941. In it, Avery chose not to discuss any of his work on bacterial transformation, a subject with which most of the audience would have been familiar. Instead, he explored his interest in the physiologic determinants and products of host-parasite relationships.
